Hi, dear colleagues and friends!

This is something I need to share with you, my faithful followers...winking

Three months ago I applied for a grant to attend the TESOL Convention in Seattle, March 2007..., and have just got the news I've been given a Professional Development Scholarship award!

Can you imagine my joy at, more than attending the, perhaps, most comprehensive congress I've ever attended, meeting those "virtual-real" friends I've made, people from all corners of the world who'll be getting together ??

I'm really thrilled at the prospect, and already making plans with many, as we'll be sharing a week and, with some of them, a place to stay at...

Thank you, girlies, once again, for keeping the spirit of "a group" here in our city, a very small but representative example of the big Webhead worldwide spirit.

Enjoy your hols, and may you all have a very promising year ahead!

Rita

I've found some free time in today's schedule my end..., and decided to fulfill my promise, so that you can also take your time, or, if you prefer, meet your commitment as soon as you can ....winking

If you are interested in the second option, you can go to our Wiki, there you'll find a new link I 've called "Assignment", where I've posted a series of prompts for you to develop in a very simple way, and then "comply with the rules of the game"...
No haste, obviously, to hand it in, but I'm just following my "gut feeling"..., this is what I myself would choose to do to take a burden off my shoulder....

Any possible queries are all welcome, my suggestion: open a new page for each pair, and start writing a common description in twos...., adding, editing, modifying, deleting... Whatever. In the meantime, you'll be using the tools we've been trying to explore and exploit...

Good luck, I'll disappear from the stage as from now, to leave the floor to you...

So, what is Second Life??

http://secondlife.com/whatis/

Well, dear colleagues, we've had our last 2006 session, and I hope all our meetings have more or less met your expectations...winking
As far as I am concerned, I am truly happy to have worked in a cohesive group, made up of common interests and hopes....
I would be glad, once more, to get your feedback, whatever its nature, as it will surely help us all grow professionally.

Regarding the final task, it might also well be a collection of suggestions/proposals put forward by all of us... I believe it could be the fairest way of coming to an agreement, satisfying everybody's aims and needs.

If you agree, then, we might start this "concoction" of ideas in our wiki, since it will serve this purpose effectively. And it will allow you all to work from home, giving you the independence and the time to think, analize, ponder over everybody's contribution towards a common product.

As soon as I can I'll give it the first kick ... to start the ball rolling, then both pairs can make modifications to the core concepts, and adapt them as you wish.

Please, let me know whether you agree with this, I also think that the longer you take to review material, the more likely you are to forget about it... At least, it happens to me..winking

So long, dear girlies!

We'll be meeting next Tuesday, for our last 2006 session, and I hope we can round up ideas, come to conclusions and analysis of work done (and not done!! laughing ), evaluate outcomes and suggest possible topics for next year, when we all hopefully meet again.

I now want to invite you all to join a short online seminar at "Knowplace" http://knowplace.ca/moodle/course/category.php?id=7 , where Moira Hunter will be hosting a discussion and exploration of possible Web Conferencing tools next weekend. Moira is a good friend of mine, based in Paris --she was presenter for Europe during Global Day 10--, a very knowledgeable EFL teacher you can meet at http://moirahunter.googlepages.com/weblearningwiththehumantouch

The topic is very interesting, "Weblearning with the human touch", but as important as that will be your experience at being in a moodle, a very comprehensive online environment which we need to explore.
I can tell you it will open up new horizons for future examination..., and further study.

I also hope you can get at least a glimpse of the whole experience, and , if possible, participate. You know it's the only way of learning...winking

See you on Tuesday morning, will take my camera!!!

460>_639856

Hi, girlies!

Just a reminder of our September meeting tomorrow Saturday 30, at 9, at the same place.
If you have anything in mind to share or deal with --we are reaching our last meetings in the year-- , I'll welcome your suggestions. My own would be rounding up the topic "Wikis" and possible uses with our students, and/or Use of Word, a topic which we have many times tackled but never seen to in detail. And I guess we can all add sth about it, out of experience. Anyway, I have some material to share, which I'll take to see together tomorrow. But I'd also like to listen to your preferences!

I'll take my camera with me this time...winking for a photo for our wiki.
Hope you can all make it! (I know you can't, Mari, no worries !!!)

A hug till tomorrow,

Rita

Hi, dear girls !

I've come across another movie maker, and have created a short, silly movie here:
http://www.digitalfilms.com/play.php?id=776094

I've posted the link to my CAE blog to spur my stds into action...winking
It's another option I found when I was not allowed to join Zimmer Twins!

Remember we are meeting tomorrow, girlies, same place, at 9...

We'll be having a look at some other wiki features, maybe polish ours, and then my suggestion could be going through some interesting uses of Word, which may come in handy on many an occasion.

If you happened to fancy doing something different, please, let us know!!!, or just make the proposal tomorrow...smiley, we can profit from so many options!

Hope you can all make it!

We are already posting in our new environment,

http://callsig2006.pbwiki.com/

New features, different options to exploit, more features to experiment with...That´s the challenge for this month.

We can upload files and photos, pages, links, and make any changes we want on any material submitted. A little bit of html will be needed, which will do us all good.

Do turn up and add sth, wikis are the best online collaborative tools.

Enjoy and keep us posted!

Dear all,
I’m so glad we started our first wiki yesterday! I think it’s going to be a great place to learn and collaborate. We could start different pages such as About us (with the group’s history), Links (already started), Projects, Photos, How to…, special interests... any other suggestions?

And remember the 11th commandment: Thou shalt not steal another member’s lock! smiley

Have a nice wiki!
Carla

Here I am trying to post an episode...Hope it works... Thanks for your help, girls smiley

Ready to move on? Have a look at these cartoons that show some commonly held myths and misconceptions about the use of technology both in education and in everyday life. What aspects of CALL do you think they (directly or indirectly) refer to?

Dear girls,
Wherever you are, I hope you can spend a wonderful friend's day celebrating with your friends. How do you feel about these quotes?
"Our paths may change as life goes along, but the bond between friends remains ever strong"

"I will always be able to get through the dark times in life, as long as my friends are waiting for me in the light."

"Good friends come and good friends go, but only the best friends stick around forever."

HAPPY FRIEND'S DAY!!!
Love,
Silvia.

Hi, girls!

A Webhead form Brazil I’m currently working with, Carla Arena, has sent me an invitation to join a blog discussion in the Learning with Computers Community of Practice from July 13th to August 10th. You are welcome to join in if you wish to discuss and share queries and findings with colleagues from all over the world.

Hello, girlies...!

Before leaving, and first of all, thank you for your kind wishes! I'll do my best to please you...)

I just want to give you food for thought..., if your winter break allows you...

This is a list of sites with info on CALL, just to give you hints on where to find sth to read, but there's no need to go too deep into it all, just feel free to browse and concentrate on what you want. I've read some of this stuff, but don't think will have the time to review it. Maybe a couple of days before our next session, once back...

If you cannot make it, do not worry, we can always start as from next session..., there's no haste!

Enjoy your hols, whatever you choose to do!!

Love all,

Rita

This is just to wish you all a very enjoyable winter break, I hope you can have a good rest and do all that we always put off "for the holidays"...

I'll be travelling to the eastern hemisphere..., and one of the big treats is meeting a couple of so-far "virtual" friends in Helsinki and Copenhagen. It goes without saying I'll take tons of photos and will then upload them to see online.

If I can, I´ll drop a line or two from somewhere, most probably from my beloved son´s....,where, btw, I'll be able to enjoy Emma´s first birthday party !!!

A big hug to you all,

Rita

Girlies,

As promised, I'm sending you the "hex code", i.e. the codes for changing text colours.
http://webmonkey.wired.com/webmonkey/reference/color_codes/

Follow this pattern:

This is fun!.

You need to go to the "edit page " to see the template, and there change the code number imbedded for the code number corresponding to the colour you prefer.

Give it a try!.

Hi girls!

Let’s try this listening activity for beginners.

Language: rooms, furniture, colors, prepositions of place

Instructions:
• Let students sign up and familiarize themselves with Gliffy before trying this activity(esp. floorplan and colors).
• Have them click on the link below to start the activity. Important: Ask ss. to open the site by placing the cursor on the link , clicking the RIGHT button and choosing “Abrir nueva ventana” , so that they can work with both applications at the same time (Podomatic and Gliffy)
Once in Gliffy
• Ss. enter their password
• Select New Document
• Name New Document (suggestion: Tim and Gabi’s floor plan) Click on floorplan
• Then Click on the PLAY button (Podomatic). Listen and help Sally put the pieces of furniture in her ideal living room.
• Finally, ss can share their plan with the teacher and other students
Let's see if it works!

Hi girls!
Here we are, experimenting with this interesting tool, trying to apply it to our daily teaching practice.
We've devised a simple game for beginner level.
You'll find it at the following site:

http://www.gliffy.com/publish/1005613/L

Have a look at it and number the shapes according to the order in which they appear. Hope you have good fun!
Love,
Marina and Silvia.

Hi, colleagues,

It's with regret that I need to say I cannot help but being disappointed by the lack of interest in keeping the profile of a SIG alive.
I can understand many different kinds of commitments prevent all of us from doing what we would like to do more often. But I believe we are all supposed to join a SIG group acknowledging what to be a member of a SIG group entails.

Nobody should take for granted that the Coordinator is a provider of information, for the spirit of the group is not that. We are all members with the same rights and duties, and we are all to profit from each other's contributions, queries and findings.
After our two first running meetings I feel that, save for the veteran members in the group, nobody has shown the will to collaborate, not even to post a word of apology.
Is there a reason behind this general attitude?

I am very sorry to be so outspoken, but would need to know what all members think about this.

I hope this time I will get everybody's response.

Rita

Hi, all members,

We had our monthly session last Saturday, and to let the absentees know about our work, as well as to leave a reminder for us all till we meet again, here goes a brief summary.

We visited Ruth Vilmi's International Writing Project at http://www.writeit.fi/sys/ and talked about the advantages of joining it with our students, and about conditions to comply with.

We reviewed Podomatic and its functions, and hands-on, saw how to join it, how to start a new episode and how to make a comment.

We explored Gliffy (http://www.gliffy.com/) and commented on its possibilities for language learning.

We caught a glimpse of Skype to use it for free international phone-like calls worldwide.

So now I hope you can devote some time to revising all this new material and to honing your skills during this month to come. Please, do keep in contact, the spirit of a SIG is this: analysing, exploring, participating, helping each other, sharing. Again, queries and questions are all welcome!

I look forward to reading comments from all of you.

Rita

Hi, all!

How are you, girlies...? I haven't heard from those I don't see regularly at work..., and we are all heading through the last week before our second meeting, next Saturday. I hope you have all remembered to get a glimpse of our common task ..., to get ready to share findings ...winking (if not yet, you still have some days ahead...)

Thanks to Carla, we have our new meeting place, which looks ok. I've already been there and booked it for us all. It's Pellegrini 1156. We'll be meeting at 9, do you all agree?
Look forward to getting a hi from all,

Rita

Hi all,

Here´s the list of topics we dealt with during our first meeting, in April.
We are supposed to browse these sites to get acquainted with the wiki format and its functions, as well as with the differences there might be between what a wiki and what a blog can offer us for language learning. This will be our topic next time we meet, which will be held on the last Saturday of May (27th), at a different place. I'll let you know about the address as soon as it's confirmed.

Girlies,

This is the url for the Online Conference on May 3.
http://jchaupart.bloki.com/
You have all the info there, as well as the instructions to be able to participate, or just be a "lurker" winking
I hope you can make it to get the feel of the experience and also to give me some feedback afterwards.

If you have any queries, please, put them up, we'll try to see to them.
Happy start!

Welcome to our CALL SIG 2006!
I hope we will all find this nook the right place to learn more, share findings and enjoy being together in this search for further professional development.
Nothing is "right" or "wrong". Everything any of us adds will help the others get a richer insight about this tool and about using it with our students.
